I cannot recommend Madeira enough. It’s enchanting, it’s beautiful, it’s a happy place. So, to help you with your travel planning, here is a list of everything you need to know before going to Madeira.

Madiera Island is truly a beautiful and scenic getaway. It has so much to offer from lush green mountains to coastal ocean towns, surfing, hiking, amazing sunrises, and everything you can want as an outdoor lover. It is a high bucket list travel spot and for good reason!

When to Visit Madeira

Knowing what months to travel anywhere is essential to your experience and view of the place. Not to mention the activities that may change depending on the seasons.

The best time to visit Madeira depends on your preferences and what you hope to experience during your trip. Madeira has a mild and temperate climate year-round, earning it the nickname “Island of Eternal Spring.” However, certain months may be more favorable for specific activities or weather conditions:

Island Months Breakdown

1. Spring (March to May):
   • Spring is a fantastic time to visit Madeira as the island bursts into bloom with colorful flowers.
   • Temperatures are pleasant, ranging from around 17°C to 21°C (63°F to 70°F).
   • This season is ideal for hiking and exploring the island’s landscapes without the summer crowds.
2. Summer (June to August):
   • Summer in Madeira brings warmer temperatures and longer days, perfect for beach activities and water sports.
   • Average temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
   • Keep in mind that summer is the peak tourist season, so popular attractions and accommodations may be more crowded and prices could be higher.
3. Autumn (September to November):
   • Autumn is another excellent time to visit Madeira, offering warm temperatures and fewer crowds compared to the summer months.
   • Temperatures typically range from 19°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F), making it pleasant for outdoor activities like hiking and sightseeing.
   • Autumn is also the harvest season, so you’ll have the opportunity to sample fresh local produce and attend traditional festivals.
4. Winter (December to February):
   • Winter in Madeira remains mild compared to many other European destinations, with temperatures rarely dropping below 15°C (59°F).
   • While it may not be warm enough for beach activities, winter is still a great time to explore Madeira’s cultural attractions, go whale watching, or enjoy the outdoors with hiking and birdwatching.
   • Keep in mind that winter can bring occasional rain showers, especially in the mountainous regions, so it’s a good idea to pack layers and waterproof clothing.

Getting To Madeira Island

Madeira is serviced by Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport (FNC), located near the capital city of Funchal. Direct flights are available from major European cities, including Lisbon, London, and Frankfurt.

The flight is relatively short – roughly about 2 hours from Porto or Lisbon – and they go multiple times a day! Much like any other flight from city to city, you should book in advance and they do vary in price.

Madeira Island Transportation

Once you arrive, getting around the island is relatively easy. There is multiple options to take for island exploration.

1. Bus
   • Funchal has a well-developed public transportation system consisting of buses and taxis that can take you around the main city, with fewer buses taking you to other parts of the island. The bus system requires some patience but it is a good way to tour the island on a budget.
     
2. Rent a Car or Scooter
   • If you are comfortable with mountain hills and heights, renting a car is also a good option. Personal vehicles give the option to explore the island at their own pace and not be confined to bus schedules, routes, or high taxi prices. It also opens up the option for a full island road trip.
     I do recommend renting a car in advance if you want to get one – especially if you need an automatic car. In high tourist months, they are rented out quickly.
3. Download Grab
   • Grab is the Uber of Portugal. On Madeira Grab works as an all-in-one taxi and personal driver system. This is a great option for those who don’t want to drive but do want to get around quickly. I do want to give a warning, in some towns outside of Funchal it can be difficult to get a taxi or Grab driver though.

Must-Do Activities in Madeira

Madeira is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, and there’s no shortage of must-see attractions to explore.

1. Take the Cable Car
   • Take a cable car ride up to Monte for panoramic views of Funchal and beyond
     
2. Sunrise at Pico Arierio
   • With Madeira’s ranging landscape, high mountains, and multiple climates, there is no such thing as a bad sunrise here. Even the cloudy days are beautiful. Consider some sunrise hikes or breakfast picnics to witness the most amazing mornings you can imagine.
     
3. The Most Amazing Hikes
   • Maderia is just stunning because it is made up of lush mountains, many different microclimates, ancient levadas, and coastal cities. There are so many Madeira hikes that lead to the best lookouts for you to witness.
     Take a moment to research the scenic views you want to see around the island and plan around those.
     
4. Water Activities
   • Madeira has phenomenal snorkeling, surfing, and whale-watching. Being so far away from the mainland, it has the kind of vibrant ocean wildlife that only islands can offer.

Must See Towns in Madeira

This is a hard question to answer. All of Madeira’s towns are beautiful and known for different things. I recommend that if you have the time, drive through the island and all its coastal towns.

If your time on Madeira is limited to a few days, then I can name my favorite towns for your consideration and exploration.

1. Funchal
   • Funchal is the capital of Madeira and the biggest city on the island. It has everything including coastal views, beaches, cobble streets, amazing parks, restaurants, markets, shops, and tours. It offers everything you need and more!
2. Porto do Cruz
   • This coastal town is small and homey! It is best known for its surfing spots and fantastic restaurant – A Pipa Restaurant & Bar – but it is also not far from amazing levada hikes and famous ocean-view lookout spots
3. Santana
   • Santana is a city built between all of the soring high mountains. It’s famous for its traditional triangular houses with thatched roofs and displays a great deal of Madeira Island culture.
4. Porto Muniz
   • This town is renowned for its natural lava pools formed by the volcanos.
5. Manchico
   • Not only is Manchico picturesque, but it is also one of the oldest towns on the island. Close to multiple amazing hiking trails, it also offers fantastic island history and culture.
