Welcome to Madeira, the picturesque Portuguese island floating in the Atlantic Ocean! Known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” this island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re looking for some good Madeira hikes to add to your itinerary, I am very happy to provide you with some suggestions!

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker seeking a challenge or a leisurely stroller, Madeira has something for everyone. In this post, I will go through the island’s top hiking trails for all walking fanatics.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hiking path

I truly think all of these hikes are phenomenal. If you have the time and the energy to explore all the scenery this island has to offer, I fully recommend doing so. Madeira Island offers only beauty and peace that I think should be fully enjoyed. With that said, there is only so much one can explore. I hope this guide can help you with your Madeira travels.

With that said, let’s get started!

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo – PR1

Pico Ruvio Lookout spot

The Pico do Arieiro hike is one of the most popular treks on the island – and rightfully so. This peak-to-peak hike is a jaw-dropping, leg-trembling journey. A total of 6.5km one way, every corner on this hike will blow you away with awe from the scenery. Hike between the peaks, over ridges, along cliffs, and through tunnels built in the mountains themselves.

It’s famous for its sharp cliff paths and amazing photo opportunities.

This is a hard hike, filled with a lot of stairs. So do come prepared with food, lots of water and warm clothes!

Also, be prepared for ever-changing weather conditions and steep ascents, but rest assured, the views from the summit make every step worthwhile.

Levada do Caldeirão Verde – PR 9

Levada do Caldeirão Verde guides you through the inner parts of the island, into the lush greenery and enchanting waterfalls. This moderate-level hike takes you through tunnels, across narrow paths carved into the mountainside, and alongside aqueducts, offering glimpses of Madeira’s natural beauty.

The trail is about 8.7km (one way). Hiking there and back is about 6 and a half hours, but the reward at the end of the trail is the breathtaking Caldeirão Verde waterfall. Nestled within a verdant amphitheater this is a sight you have to see!

Levada das 25 Fontes and Risco – PR6

Immerse yourself in the island’s beauty and walk along the Levada das 25 Fontes and Risco trail, a delightful hike showcasing Madeira’s diverse flora and fauna. The hike leads you through ancient laurel forests, across cute streams, and to some waterfalls, as you make your way to the impressive “25 Fontes” (25 Springs) waterfall and the towering cliffs of Risco. This moderate-level hike is perfect for nature lovers seeking tranquility and serenity amidst breathtaking surroundings.

The trail takes about 3 hours to complete the round trip, which is about 8.6km (4.3 km each way).

Pont do Pargo to Paul do Mar

This trail allows you to experience the rugged beauty of Madeira’s western coastline. Beginning at the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse, this coastal hike offers stunning views of sheer cliffs, waves, and dramatic rock formations (love rocks!!).

From the lighthouse, you make your way towards the charming surfer village of Paul do Mar – also known as the fishing center of Madeira. The trek totals about 12km one way, equating to an estimated 3 hours from start to endpoint.

Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço – PR8

When looking for something unique on Madeira, make sure to visit the eastern tip of the island – Ponta de Sao Lourenco. With all the amazing hiking Madeira has to offer, this hike stands out for its landscape and unusual terrain compared to the rest of the island.

Opposed to green trees and mountains, Ponta de Sao Lourence is made up of colorful rocks. It holds a dramatic landscape and stretches far out to the ocean. Surrounded by pure blue, you get the endless ocean breeze and nothing around to block your view.
