Madeira is blessed with numerous vantage points all over the island. We all love good lookouts, but I think they’re best for watching the sunrise. The peace, the romance, the thrill of the world waking up for you to witness! Watching the sunrise is one of my favorite things to do, so, here is a list of the most amazing sunrise spots on Madeira.
Madeira Island is known for its beauty. It is called the “Hawaii of Europe” because it’s filled with lush mountains, surrounded by ocean, and has endless hikes that deserve attention and appreciation. It also has some of the most amazing vantage points spanning from every side of the island to watch the sunrise.
So, lets talk about them:
Pico do Arieiro
Pico do Arieiro is my favorite of all the spots I will mention here, which is why I wanted to put it first on the list! As the third-highest peak on the island, Pico do Arieiro offers an unparalleled view of the mountains, the towns down below, and the water stretching as far as the eye can see.
At an altitude of 1,818 meters, you are just barely above the clouds, so even on those cloud-covered days, the sun will shine for you.
Be prepared for an early morning drive though, as this point takes about 30 minutes by car to get to from Funchal. This point is also the start of the popular Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo Hike which is arguably the most popular hike on Madeira. Considering the fame of this mountain, the parking and best spots to look out can get very busy.
I would say, arrive about an hour before sunrise to secure a parking spot and a good point to watch the rising sun. Bring a headlamp and some warm coats because even in the summer it will get cold on the mountains!
Pico Ruivo
Another excellent spot in Madeira for sunrise viewing is Pico Ruivo, the highest peak in Madeira. This spot requires a little hike to get to, however. You can begin your hike under the starlit sky and climb the stairs to the top of the mountain to see the sun breaking over the landscape and lighting up the mountain peaks surrounding you! It’s actually amazing.
The climb is about 30 minutes from the parking lot to Pico Ruivo Point and the 360 views. However, the hike and the views from Pico Ruivo are simply awe-inspiring, making it a favorite for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
São Lourenço Peninsula Ocean Sunrise
Third on the list of best sunrise spots is located on the eastern tip of Madeira, the São Lourenço Peninsula. São Lourenço is made up of dramatic cliffs, rugged terrain, and uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain here is so different from any other spot on the island because, instead of being covered in trees and waterfalls, these cliffs show off their color through the rock formations.
The colorful rocks make up this point!
Being on the edge of the island, your views will mainly be of the ocean and the unique rocks in the proximity, which is actually a very amazing site. Just seeing the ocean covered in the light orange of the rising sun is so peaceful in my opinion.
You don’t need to do the hike for this point to get beautiful. The view from the parking lot is just as pretty in my opinion.

Sunrise in Porto Moniz
Porto Moniz is beautiful within the town and from above. The city itself is a scenic destination made for movies.
Known for its natural volcanic pools, the town also has stunning coastal scenery perfect for sunrise viewing. Porto Moniz actually offers you 3 perfect locations to catch the day’s first light:
- The rugged shoreline
- The city lookout is just up the mountain
- The cliffs overlooking the sea
All these locations provide different perspectives on the beautiful landscape while you witness the sunrise casting its glow over the horizon.
Final Tips for Watching the Madeira Sunrises
All in all, any sunrise you get the chance to see on Madeira will be surrounded by beauty and ocean. You have the luxury of picking you’re favorite now.
Remember to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly, as clear skies are ideal for optimal sunrise viewing. Whether you choose to watch the sunrise from a mountain peak, coastal cliff, or secluded viewpoint, the beauty of dawn breaking over Madeira’s breathtaking landscapes is sure to leave a lasting impression.
